The circuit of Shanghai it is located on the outskirts of the Chinese city of the same name. The track was built in 2003 with structures with innovative material characteristics to respond to the marshy terrain on which the grandstands and track are located. The designer is German Hermann Tilke who created stands with particular shapes that recall lotus leaves.
The track is very technical and it is a common idea among professionals, drivers and fans that it is one of the most successful "Tilkodromes". The layout It features fast corners, straights and violent braking. The track was designed to resemble the Chinese character shàng (上) which means "above" or "climb" and which is also the basis of the name Shanghai.
